‘Hair’ Original Lummox Drawing by Artist Millree Hughes

from Millree Hughes

My work has always been about the relationship between technology and nature. It’s been mostly about how digital has affected painting and drawing. But sometimes the drawing has broken free of that relationship when I can say it better in ink and watercolour.
From 2004 to 2012 I drew the hooligan, glam rockers that turned up for the summer in the Welsh holiday resort village where I I grew up. Kids a bit older than me who would fight on the beaches and drink on the dodgems.
It was working class youth subculture which in the mid 70s was right on the brink of the work pulling clear of the work force.
I imagined a slightly older group playing as if Sweet were at the local pub ten years after their was sell by date. Michael Steinberg (my art dealer at that time) hosted the performance at Miami Basel in 2010. The film maker Peter Boyd McLean filmed the ‘making of’ the performance. The mocudramedy ‘Lummox’. I drew from 2004 til 2012, a thousand drawings that Jane Hart exhibited at The Arts and Culture Center of Hollywood in 2012
I’m making new related music
